Good Things Happening in Our Schools:

Henry Ford Academy: School for Creative Studies Getting Attention for Mural Project
Students at Henry Ford Academy: School for Creative Studies in Detroit continue to attract attention for an amazing mural project they’re working on.

Students at Henry Ford Academy: School for Creative Studies (a middle and high school) have been working on a huge mural project since the summer, getting assistance from some of the top artists in the country, including renowned muralist Hubert Massey. The program was recently profiled in Grand Valley Magazine.

“Being part of the mural project gives us a chance to show off the good parts of Detroit, the parts we know,” Taylor Childs, a senior at Henry Ford Academy: School for Creative Studies, was quoted as saying. “We have a chance to tell people through our art how we think about this place, and what it can be in the future.”

Henry Ford Academy: School for Creative Studies is authorized by Grand Valley State University.

You’ll find the complete story – and videos of the project – here.

Are You Ready for the Common Core Standards? Spots Are Filling Up Fast for MAPSA’s Workshop
One of the most popular and well-received sessions at the 2012 Michigan Charter School Conference was Cynthia Millinger’s introductory workshop on Common Core Standards.

Cynthia is one of the country’s premiere trainers on Common Core, and as the educators who attended her session will attest, she’s highly informative, inspirational and entertaining.

MAPSA is fortunate to be bringing Cynthia to Michigan for a Common Core Essentials workshop – offered in December, February and March. Following Cynthia’s appearance at the conference, the December workshop filled up immediately (only a couple spots are left for the Math session), and the February and March workshops are quickly filling up, as well.

If you haven’t yet signed up, your school will want to register immediately. Each workshop is four days – two days of Math, two days of ELA. MAPSA has made it easy for schools to register separately for the ELA and Math sessions.

The dates for the December Math session are Dec. 12 & 14, and only a couple spots remain. The December ELA session is sold out.
