Explicit Reading Comprehension Strategies: Helping Students Get Meaning From Complex Text - Starts February 27, 2012; Online Module runs for 5 weeks; CEU credits offered
In this online module participants will:
- Learn about the need to explicitly teach reading comprehension strategies in middle and high school.
- Practice two reading comprehension strategies: summarizing and questioning
- Engage in interactive activities and discussion, examine student work, and explore the resource library for new approaches to try in the classroom
- Gain awareness of guided practice, including thinkalouds and reciprocal teaching
- Work in teams to collect specific strategies to help students understand complext text across subject areas
Participant commitment:
- Log on 3-4 times each week to complete 2 hours of learning/week
- Participate actively in engaging discussions and small-group projects with other charter school teachers
- Complete all assignments, including developing focus student profiles and trying out instructional strategies with students
Requirements
- For online learning you will need access to a computer, email and high speed internet (not dial up).
- Any of the following web browsers: Firefox 3, Safari 3, Google Chrome 4, Opera 9, MS Internet Explorer 7 (or later versions of these).
- Flash Player, Quicktime Player and java plug-in installed (If you can watch videos on YouTube you will be fine).
- You will need to have access to teaching students while you are taking the module.
