MAPSA Announces Finalists for 2013 Michigan Charter School Teacher and Administrator of the Year

LANSING, Michigan (October 3, 2013) – The Michigan Association of Public School Academies, the state’s united voice for charter schools, today announced the finalists for the Michigan Charter School Administrator of the Year and Teacher of the Year awards. The winners will be announced on Nov. 5 at Cobo Center in Detroit, during the 16th annual Michigan Charter School Conference.

The awards are among the most prestigious honors a charter school educator in Michigan can earn. The finalists in the Teacher of the Year competition were chosen from the state’s more than 6,000 public charter school teachers. The finalists in the Administrator of the Year competition were chosen from more than 1,000 administrators statewide.

There are 298 charter schools in Michigan, educating about 9 percent of the state’s school-age population.

The finalists represent all levels of public education – kindergarten through high school – and come from all over the state, from Metro Detroit to Grand Rapids.

“Michigan’s charter schools have some of the most talented and dedicated educators in the country, and this year’s finalists truly represent the best of the best,” said Dan Quisenberry, President of MAPSA. “When you look at the list of finalists for these awards, you see an impressive diversity of schools and educational offerings. You see an educator from a school like Covenant Academy Southwest in Detroit, which serves an at-risk population. And you see another educator from a school like the West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science in Grand Rapids, which is one of the top-performing schools in the state. We even have a high school Latin teacher among the finalists. How impressive is that?”

The finalists for 2013 Michigan Charter School Teacher of the Year:

  • Kristen Allen, a fifth-grader teacher at Conner Creek Academy East in Roseville.
  • Mary Dyer, a middle school integrated and physical science teacher at Michigan Collegiate Middle and High School in Warren.
  • Adam Krebsbach, a fourth-grade teacher at the West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science in Grand Rapids.
  • Jennifer Nichols, a kindergarten through eighth grade at-risk math and ELA interventionist at Trillium Academy in Taylor.
  • Kurt Steiner, a Latin teacher at Grand River Preparatory High School in Kentwood.

The finalists for 2013 Michigan Charter School Administrator of the Year:

  • Raymond Alvarado, the administrator at Covenant Academy Southwest in Detroit.
  • Fred Borowski, the principal at Taylor International Academy in Southfield.
  • Amanda Dickens, the principal at Forest Academy in Kalamazoo.
  • Shawn Leonard, the principal at East Arbor Charter Academy in Ypsilanti.
  • Karen Smith, the principal at Conner Creek Academy East in Roseville.

The winners will be announced during a morning session on Nov. 5 at the Michigan Charter School Conference at Cobo Center in Detroit. More than 1,5000 charter school educators from around the state are expected to attend the two-day event.
