School Spotlight: West Michigan Aviation Academy's Students Take Flight

One of the schools featured at this year's MAPSA Conference was the West Michigan Aviation Academy in Grand Rapids. The school performed an exciting indoor air show at the conference, and as you'll see in this video, WMAA has turned out to be the perfect academic fit for one particular student, Josh Nienhaus.

There are few things that make me happier than opening up a newspaper, turning on the TV, or visiting a news site and seeing a great story about one of Michigan's charter schools. One of the valuable services we provide at MAPSA is aggressively spreading the word about all the wonderful things happening in your schools - whether it's your students, your administrators or your innovative approach to education. We also promote positive stories about charter schools in general.

Positive stories are great because they don't just lift that particular school - they end up being a good thing for all charter schools. The more that parents read and hear about the innovative and quality education that can be found at a charter school, the more likely they'll be to explore educational options for their own child.

At MAPSA, we'll continue to promote good news about Michigan's charter schools - and we encourage all of you to do the same. If there's anything we can do to help you spread the word, please let us know!

Best Practice of the Month:
Establish a Relationship With the Local Media

The first step to getting good publicity for your school? Establishing a good relationship with the local media. Rather than sending out a mass press release to trumpet your school's good news, send a personal e-mail or make a call to the education reporter of the local newspaper. Most newspapers have a reporter dedicated to the education beat, and that's the person who needs to become your new best friend! Since you want to have an ongoing relationship with this reporter, invite him or her to your school and make sure they know you by name. These folks are always looking for good stories to fill their pages, so if you're the school they know the best, you're the school they'll be calling. Personal relationships are the key in most areas of life, and it's certainly the case when it comes to getting good P.R. for your school. You'll find more tips for getting great publicity here.

Lansing Connection
The Michigan legislature has been very busy during the fall session. The House Education Committee has been taking testimony on a package of bills on school accountability.
HB 4154 will repeal accreditation
HB 5111 will require third graders to be reading at a third grade level before advancing to 4th grade, and
HB 5112 will require the MDE to issue letter grades to each school building in the State of Michigan.
HB 5111 will have a companion bill that will round out the interventions necessary to implement this type of requirement and this bill will go through reiterations.
HB 5112 issues grades based on proficiency and growth. While the test isn't known yet, and we won't have impact data for a while, it is important to get a framework in place before the MDE is working on their next waiver. The metrics would replace the achievement gap with growth of the bottom 30% of students. This would replace the color system and the top to bottom list. There would also be consequences tied to failing schools (defined as schools with an F grade AND in the lowest 5% of schools for growth).
The House is expected to vote on these bills before the end of the year.
