Good Things Happening in Our Schools:

Beautification Grant Helps Reach Charter Academy Students Brighten Up School
Funded by a beautification grant, nearly 75 students and faculty from Reach Charter Academy in Roseville recently spent an afternoon planting flowers and trees near the school entrances. Students working at the east entrance filled flowerbeds around the flagpole, school sign and alongside the sidewalk with 15 flats (about 300 flowers) of marigolds, vinca, and other annual mix plants. A handful of middle school students helped plant eight Cleveland cedars by the school’s west entrance.

The plants, paver bricks and additional supplies were funded through a $1,500 School Beautification Grant awarded to Reach Charter Academy by its authorizer, Grand Valley State University. It was one of six schools to win the competitive grant.

Jim Street, a teacher at Reach Charter Academy and the leader of the school’s environmental committee, said the school had planned this project for a long time but just didn’t have the funds before winning the grant. After purchasing the trees, dirt and flowers, he was pleased to see there was enough money to buy the paver bricks, which allowed the students to build additional flowerbeds around the school’s sign and flagpole.

Reach Charter Academy is managed by National Heritage Academies and authorized by Grand Valley State University.

Shown here, students at Reach Charter Academy line the front entrance walkway with marigolds as part of their school beautification project.
