2006-07 MEAPS Show Charters Closing Academic Gap

Charts and Graphs of MEAP data >

Michigan's charter public schools exceed the average scores of their host districts on 23 of 27 MEAP tests this year, tie on three others and are one point shy on the final test - once again delivering a better performance than the previous year.

The highest-scoring 20 schools are spread statewide, in communities such as Detroit, Ypsilanti, Lapeer, Midland, Portage, Holland, and Petoskey.  Delivering 82% - 91% proficiency on all tests combined, the schools offer rich variety, including emphasis on the arts, the outdoors, Montessori curriculum, college preparation, the basics, weekly student assessment, and/or character education.

Significantly, the number of schools "beating the odds" climbed from 25 last year to 40 this year.  These primarily urban schools meet a state formula requiring at least 60% proficiency in math and English language arts, with at least half of the students qualifying for free- or reduced-price lunch.

Other highlights of this year's MEAP results include:

  • Charter public schools in Detroit exceed the local district on 24 of 27 tests - up from 20 last year. They tie on two additional tests and are within 1 point on the remaining exam.
  • Fifty charters -  42% of the 120 that took all 27 K-8 tests and had classes large enough to record scores -  exceed the state average on 10 or more tests. More than half beat the state score on at least 20 tests.
