Pre-Conference Workshops
Thursday, November 1
8:45 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.

Always a favorite. Thursday's free pre-conference workshops are led primarily by recipients of federal dissemination grants, awarded by the Michigan Department of Education as a way of sharing best practices.

  • Change & Leadership Challenges
Michael T. Renn, manager of the Center for Creative Leadership's education sector, discusses educational leadership and the unique leadership challenges facing educators. He'll help participants gain new insights for tackling complex challenges and lead an assessment that measures a leader's preferred style in dealing with situations involving change. The North Carolina based Center is a global authority in leadership research and training. Some 20,000 managers and executives, educators, government administrators, and community service and volunteer leaders attend its programs each year.

  • Teacher Support Team Program
Several schools in Michigan are using this organized, schoolwide model to plan and provide individualized instruction and monitor student progress in 10-week increments. The TSTP helps students master prerequisite skills, provides high levels of support for teachers, and creates collaborative instructional settings. Eleven charters, three traditional schools and one ISD are involved with this grant and will share insights.

  • Teachers Helping Teachers
Chandler Park Academy in Detroit shares its best-practice experience paring outstanding retired teachers with current staff members in a program called "Teachers Helping Teachers." The consulting retirees serve as mentors and peer coaches, all with an eye on improving instruction.

  • Enhancing Learning through Brain Gym ®
Stressed students can't experience joy, ease or success in learning because they struggle to concentrate, organize, participate and remember. Brain Gym® activates the whole brain and restores students' natural capacity for learning by creating emotional safety, bonding, connection and personal empowerment. Monica Panagos, founder of The Michigan Brain Gym® Consortium, and Susan Owens, special education regional supervisor with the Lenawee ISD, lead the workshop.

  • Understanding Institutional Racism
Bree Carlson and Suzanne Plihcik of Dismantling Racism Works (dRworks) present a framework for understanding institutional racism and its impact on our work. They'll examine ways in which institutions perpetuate racism and produce significant disparities in outcomes for students of color and white students. Participants will explore methods of identifying and reducing such racism in schools.
