Writing an Effective Letter to Your Legislators 

Address it properly: Know your legislator's full name and correct spelling. For example:

In the Body of the Letter:

1. Tell your story:
          My name is... and I am a parent of a student who attends... We chose to have our son/daughter attend XYZ Charter School because...
   
2. Explain why educational choice is important to children:
         Our family has been associated with XYZ school for __ years. We have seen our      child(ren) receive a quality education (give examples). All parents should be allowed to choose the best learning environment for their children.
   
3. Ask your legislator to take action:
         I urge you to put children before politics and support the charter school movement and education reform.

Additional Notes: 

• An original piece of correspondence is a powerful tool when advocating for charter schools. Officials and their staffs pay careful attention to their mail. 
• Always include your first and last name and address on the letter. Thank the legislator for considering your views. Indicate willingness to help. 
• Be reasonably brief. Many issues are complex, but a single page, presenting your opinions, facts, arguments or proposals is preferred and welcomed by most legislators.
