Welcome to the
Grassroots Action Center
for Michigan's charter public schools!

ALL CHILDREN DESERVE TO LEARN

A Charter Parent's Story:

When my two sons were in the traditional public school system, they were both categorically "learning disabled."  Although they were in 6th and 7th grade and getting all B's and C's they could barely read past a 3rd grade level.   Both boys were fortunate enough to have 7th and 8th grade at Canton Charter Academy where they were expected to rise to their grade level. With the help of the special education department and other school personnel they did.

The school focuses on personal responsibility--not what feels good.  Teachers focus on recognition and reward for achievement. They praise their students for what they do right at the same time putting the responsibility on the kids to do what is right and to keep their morals high.  Now as the boys have entered high school and I have a daughter starting at Canton Charter Academy, I clearly see that this school has had an incredible positive impact in the lives of our kids.

Lori Levi -- Canton Charter Academy Parent

Thousands of parents like Lori are passionate supporters of charter public schools.  Your charter school -- one of 230 in Michigan -- offers improved academics and a better learning environment for children.

Unfortunately, Michigan law allows only a few charters to exist.  Many families -- often your friends or nieces and nephews -- are denied the option of charter schools.  In fact, 12,000 children remain on charter waiting lists.

These families need your help!  Take action today!  Click on the button below, tell your child?s charter story and request more charter schools for Michigan's families.

Teachers, use your voice to support your school

"I didn't realize I was part of something so big."  It's a comment heard over and over. About 5,000 Michigan teachers choose to work in charter public schools, and the most common reasons they cite for doing so include:

Strong, individualized focus on students
Freedom to implement programs and initiatives as students need them
Clear influence from teachers in setting school policy
Emphasis on discipline, as well as physical and emotional safety
Family-like atmosphere

For years the opposition has discredited charter public schools.  It is up to you to set the record straight.  Please take a few moments to use your voice and tell your elected officials why you choose to teach in a charter public school and why it is important for them to support the continuation of current charter public schools as well as opening up more.  Tell why your charter public school is so great and why quality educational options are so important to students.
