| Spring Lake Charter School Receives Statewide Award of Excellence |
| West Michigan Academy of Arts & Academics sits in a region where highly regarded schools are relatively common. Yet, its students come from seven districts and its enrollment approaches 400, as parents opt for its unique and extensive combination of arts and traditional learning.
Students at the academy - a charter public school serving students in grades PreK-8 - have widely diverse skill levels and yet achieve excellent academic results. Parents are highly involved at the school, which also has a summer program that serves the far-reaching community. |

| Most Charters Receive First Ed YES! Grades; Results On Positive Track |
When most Michigan charters received their first Education YES! grades in August, nearly 90% received As, Bs and Cs. "We at MAPSA are proud of how well charter public schools are serving students. | National Charter Schools Week Coming in May |
More than 3,000 charter public schools across America - including 199 in Michigan - will celebrate their achievements and ever-expanding impact on the country's education reform efforts during the fifth annual National Charter Schools Week, May 3-7, 2004.
Families of more than 735,000 students and about 50,000 teachers choose charter schools as their preferred place to learn and teach. Michigan charters serve more than 75,000 children and employ more than 4,000 teachers. |

| MAPSA Salutes Black River's David Angerer as Charter Administrator of the Year |
A Holland-area charter school administrator who has directed substantial increases in academic performance and dramatic enrollment growth has been named 2003 Administrator of the Year by the Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA).

Angerer, head of Black River Public School in Holland, received the 21st Century Miracle Worker Award at a luncheon Friday, November 7 during the 6th annual Michigan Charter Schools Conference at the Hyatt Regency-Dearborn. | Shepherd Teacher Wins Statewide Recognition |
A Shepherd charter school teacher who made it a priority to understand and meet the needs of an autistic student has been named 2003 Teacher of the Year by the Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA).
Kim Nelson, a kindergarten teacher at Morey Charter School in Shepherd, received the 21st Century Miracle Worker Award at a luncheon Friday, November 7 during the 6th annual Michigan Charter Schools Conference at the Hyatt Regency-Dearborn. | Melhado Receives Charter Schools Leadership Award |
Angelete Melhado, one of Michigans early charter schools supporters and former director of Oakland Universitys office of urban partnerships and public school academies, received a Leadership Award from the Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA).

| Michigan Charter Schools & Academic Success - Setting the Record Straight |
| Five representatives of Michigan's charter schools met Thursday, Oct. 30 with Detroit News reporter Brad Heath and his editor, Gary Miles, to discuss a story that ran Sunday regarding six educational providers and the academic performance of their schools. Charter leaders and parents throughout Michigan are outraged by the story, which presents a one-sided picture, serious factual errors and a fraction of the real story. |

| Michigan Charter Schools Set State Pace on 2003 MEAP Progress |
An analysis of recently released 2003 MEAP scores shows Michigan's charter public schools again have accelerated learning at an exceptional pace. That is especially evident in the state's largest urban areas; in the seventh and eighth grades, where students have spent more years in the charter environment; and in schools open at least six years.
In Detroit, home to more than 40 charter schools, students attending charters open six years or longer outperformed the traditional district in seven of 10 grades and subjects tested. They came within 1 to 3 percentage points of matching the remaining three scores. |

| National Report Cites Michigan Universities as High-Quality Charter School Authorizers |
The Michigan Association of Public School Academies, in responding to a report issued today, is pleased that Michigan has received one of the nation's highest grades for charter school authorizer oversight procedures - particularly among university authorizers.
Only four of 24 states included in the study received better letter grades than Michigan's "B" for authorizer practices. Three others received Bs and had slightly higher raw scores on a 4-point scale. |

Leaders of a new Belleville-area charter school say they still plan to open this fall, although state Superintendent of Schools Tom Watkins is refusing to allow it and six others to receive state funding. Despite the hurdle, officials at Keystone Charter Academy, located on Bemis Road in Sumpter Township, are continuing with today's 3:30 p.m. "lottery" to determine which of 600 students will secure one of 400 available seats. |
