OUTSTANDING EDUCATION LEADERS RECOGNIZED
Bingham Arts Academy, Eylastine Davis & Matthew Briere take top awards at annual charter schools conference
Detroit, MI – This year’s outstanding public charter school, educator and administrator were recognized this week during the 13th Annual Michigan Charter Schools Conference. This annual conference, held at Detroit’s Cobo Center on November 1 & 2, is one of the largest gatherings of charter school professionals in the nation, with nearly 2,500 participants.
Recipients of this year’s awards, announced on Tuesday, are:
School of Excellence: Bingham Arts Academy, Alpena
Bingham Arts Academy serves 163 K-8 students. The school is authorized by Bay Mills Community College and managed by Mosaica Education. Their mission is to provide a safe, nurturing environment where languages and cultures are taught. The academy is founded on the belief that the arts allow the expression of feelings, fulfill the inherent need to create, and can help find meaning in our lives. Other finalists for this year’s award were Advanced Technology Academy in Dearborn and Detroit Merit Academy in Detroit.
Administrator of the Year: Eylastine Davis, Detroit Service Learning Academy, Detroit
Detroit Service Learning Academy serves students in grades K-8 with enrollment of 1127. The school is authorized by Lake Superior State University. Colleagues have said that Mrs. Davis has, “expectations for achievement has created a culture that defies the odds, her students consistently exceed state standards on the MEAP test,” and “They know she has a heart for their understanding of the educational process and how to access it for the benefit if their children.” Other finalists for this year’s award were Cameron Clark, CASMAN Alternative Academy in Manistee and Lawrence Kubovchick, Concord Academy Boyne in Boyne City.
Teacher of the Year: Matthew Briere, Trillium Academy, Taylor
Trillium Academy is a K-12 school with an enrollment of 494. The school is authorized by Central Michigan University and managed by The Romine Group. One of his colleagues said, “Mr. Briere understands that to get the passion that he wants them to gain he has to have full engagement. Full engagement requires confidence, interest, challenge, and enjoyment and that is exactly what Mr. Briere gets by utilizing his student’s backgrounds, experiences, strengths and skills.” Other finalists for this year’s award were Kristina Hansen from Nah Tah Wahsh Public School Academy in Wilson and Osama Bazzi of Star International Academy in Dearborn Heights.
“These award winners exemplify the commitment to quality demonstrated by the state’s public charter school movement, where students are closing the achievement gap and increasing academic success,” said Dan Quisenberry, President of the Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA).
