Meet the 2019 MI Charter Awards semifinalists

Twenty outstanding educators from all corners of Michigan have been honored as semifinalists for the 2019 Michigan Charter School Teacher of the Year and Administrator of the Year Awards. Each semifinalist embodies the values that make charter educators unique - the innovation, professionalism and passion that drive success in their classrooms. 

There are more than 10,000 charter school teachers and more than 1,500 charter school administrators in Michigan, and nearly  600 of those incredible educators were nominated for the 2019 Awards. From over 200 applications, the semifinalists were selected with careful consideration.

The 10 semifinalists for the 2019 Michigan Charter School Teacher of the Year award:

  • Megan Altieri, Wellspring Preparatory High School, Grand Rapids, art
  • Maellen DeBruyn, The Woodland School, Traverse City, grades 6-8
  • Jill Carbone, Summit Academy North Middle School, Romulus, English
  • Joel Hockin, University Preparatory Academy Science + Math Middle School, Detroit, science
  • Leslie Katz, Marshall Academy, Marshall, English Language Arts
  • Katherine Ligon, Kingsbury Country Day School, Oxford, second grade
  • Valmire McGerty, Michigan Math and Science Academy, Sterling Heights, social studies
  • Jennifer Melero, Holly Academy, Holly, kindergarten
  • Joy Smith, Oakland Academy, Portage, second grade
  • Jayme McWain,Grand River Preparatory High School, Grand Rapids, psychology

The 10 semifinalists for the 2019 Michigan Charter School Administrator of the Year award:

  • Mohammed Alsanai,Bridge Academy East, Hamtramck
  • Kerri Barrett, West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science, Grand Rapids
  • Jennifer Conley, Achieve Charter Academy, Canton
  • Ali DuBois, Muskegon Montessori Academy for Environmental Change, Muskegon
  • Vondra Glass, Warrendale Charter Academy, Detroit
  • Autumn Mattson, Creative Technologies Academy, Cedar Springs
  • Constance Price, Martin Luther King Jr. Education Center Academy, Detroit
  • Walter Reese, Plymouth Scholars Charter Academy, Plymouth
  • Mark Talbot, Huron Academy, Sterling Heights
  • Koree Woodward, Grand River Preparatory High School, Grand Rapids

From here, the list of semifinalists will be whittled down to five teacher and five administrator finalists, who will be announced via Facebook on April 1 (teachers) and April 2 (administrators). The winners of the 2019 Michigan Charter School Administrator of the Year and Teacher of the Year Awards will then be announced in early May.
