Joel Hockin

Science Teacher

UPrep Science & Math Middle School (UPSM)

Joel teaches science at UPSM, a remarkable school that shares a campus with the Michigan Science Center in midtown Detroit. It’s one of the best locations for a school you’ll find anywhere in the country. Joel believes that the ultimate purpose in teaching is to instill curiosity followed by perseverance in our students. They need to feel that the curriculum is applicable to their present world and then be given the opportunity to make a difference. Innovation in educational pedagogy is a non- negotiable when the goal is to reach all students and take them to their highest potential. He's worked with organizations like MI Technological University and ROOTS Engineering to develop cutting edge curriculum that immerses middle schoolers in college level lab experiences.
