Student Performances at

Charter Day at the Capitol

One of the most powerful parts of Charter Day at the Capitol is the students.
Each year, schools from across Michigan bring their talents, creativity, and voices to the Capitol through live performances that turn the building into a true celebration of public education. From marching bands and dance teams to choirs, string ensembles, and slam poetry, student performances bring energy, joy, and authenticity to the day.
Performing at the Capitol gives students a chance to:

Share their talents on a statewide stage

Represent their school and community

Show lawmakers what charter public schools make possible

It also gives lawmakers a chance to see — and feel — the impact of charter schools in their districts.
If your school has a group that loves to perform, we invite you to be part of this year’s celebration. Whether your students shine through music, dance, spoken word, or something entirely unique, their voices belong at the Capitol.

Showcase Schools at
Charter Day at the Capitol

Showcase Schools are where innovation, creativity, and student learning come to life on the Capitol lawn.
Each year, a select group of charter public schools sets up interactive displays under tents, giving lawmakers, families, and visitors the opportunity to experience firsthand what makes charter public schools unique. These exhibits are designed to be visual, engaging, and student-led, offering a window into the exciting work happening in classrooms across Michigan.

Showcase Schools often feature:

Hands-on learning projects

Innovative programs or tools

Visual displays of student work

Interactive demonstrations led by students

Schools typically bring a group of students to staff their tent, explain what they are showcasing, and engage with lawmakers and attendees as they explore the lawn. These conversations create meaningful connections between policymakers and the charter public school communities they serve.
If your school has something creative, innovative, or inspiring to share, we encourage you to apply to be a Showcase School.
Please note: tents do not have access to electricity, so displays should be designed to be fully self-powered.
