As a program coach for Professional Innovators in Education, Kenis Wallevand brings a deep belief in the transformative power of education. Her journey with the program reflects both her commitment to nurturing new educators and her growth as a leader shaped by the diverse voices she coaches.

Kenis joined the Professional Innovators program as a coach in 2019. What drew her in was a shared philosophy: “that education should open doors rather than reinforce outdated systems”. “Schools often remain rooted in ways of teaching and learning designed for a very different time,” she explains. “Professional Innovators felt like a powerful answer, with a program that empowers educators while they teach, supported by research-based coaching and collaborative learning.”

Kenis Wallevand’s favorite part of being a Program Coach comes during the moment when relationships solidify and real growth comes into focus. After the initial phases of observation and adjustment, educators begin taking confident steps forward, and they can see the difference for themselves.

“It’s powerful watching someone move from ‘Am I doing the right thing?’ to ‘I can see the difference I’m making,’” she says. “That shift in confidence, intentionality, and willingness to take risks is what makes coaching so deeply rewarding.” This transformation, she believes, is when Professional Innovators’ mission shines brightest. She helps educators step into their roles with clarity, purpose, and the belief that their work matters.

For Kenis, success isn’t defined by a perfect answer or a well-executed lesson plan. Instead, it begins when an educator arrives with an authentic question, idea, or challenge as something they’re unsure how to tackle. Kenis reflects on what a successful coaching session looks like to her: “A great session is when we reflect, ideate, research, and land on a thoughtful next step,” she says.

“When a candidate leaves energized and clear about what they’ll try next, that’s success.”

Among the many accomplishments in her coaching career, what stands out most to Kenis is watching educators complete the program with passion, purpose, and a renewed commitment to their communities.

She is especially moved by candidates who discover new passions, whether in classroom leadership, special education, counseling, or broader school leadership, and pursue further education or opportunities to deepen their impact.

“These moments remind me why I entered education,” she reflects. “To contribute to a system where all students have access to high-quality learning experiences.”

For Kenis, the heart of coaching lies in removing barriers, nurturing talent from all backgrounds, and building an educator workforce that reflects and uplifts the diversity, strengths, and hopes of the students they serve.
