When you walk into Brett Bittrick’s classroom at Black River Public School, you're entering a space fueled by curiosity, creativity, and community. For the past 16 years, Brett has dedicated himself to inspiring young minds—15 of those years with sixth-grade students, and now guiding eighth-grade physical science and high schoolers in Advanced Geology. His passion for teaching is rivaled only by his commitment to creating meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that spark lifelong scientific thinking.
Recently, Brett was honored with MAPSA’s #MiCharterHero Award, a recognition given monthly to one exceptional leader in Michigan’s public charter school community. He was chosen from among many inspiring nominees, and during his surprise ceremony, it was clear just how deeply his impact is felt.
The celebration was nothing short of electric. Principal Shannon Bruninks introduced him with pride, and a few inside jokes including a personalized lab coat. MAPSA President Dan Quisenberry presented the award. State Senator Roger Victory delivered a formal tribute, and special guests—including GVSU’s Associate Vice President of Charter Schools Leah Breen and several MAPSA team members. They were joined by the entire middle school community for the occasion.
But one of the most special moments of the day? Seeing Brett’s family in the crowd—his wife, children —beaming with pride. Their presence spoke volumes about the love and support that surrounds Brett not only at school, but at home. The applause was loud, the smiles were wide, and the emotion in the room was unmistakable. This community truly adores him.
Thinking back, Brett said, “I still feel like Black River is a good fit,” all these years later, it’s easy to see why. He didn’t just find a job at Black River—he found a calling. Whether he's sharing an explosive vinegar-and-baking-soda demonstration or guiding students to think like real scientists by asking, “What’s the next step?”, his approach leaves a lasting impression. In one memorable moment, a student proposed leaving out a solution over the weekend to observe the results—proof that Brett’s students aren’t just learning science, they’re becoming scientists.
He credits the school’s culture as one of its most unique features—one that’s intentionally built and nurtured by every staff member, especially the Dean of Students John Donelly. “You can choose to create a culture or not; either way, one will be established,” Brett shared, reflecting the intentional spirit behind Black River’s success.
Brett Bittrick is more than a teacher. He’s a Realtor, a small business owner, a proud father and grandfather, and above all, a humble and dedicated educator. “I feel very fortunate in this life,” he told us. And Michigan’s charter school community is fortunate to have someone like him shaping its future.
