On Friday, MAPSA had the privilege of honoring Kristin Helmbold, an eighth-grade teacher at Chandler Woods Charter Academy, as the #MiCharter Hero for September. It was an ordinary Friday middle school assembly, and thanks to the help of the middle school Dean Tim Rodriguez, the honor was a complete surprise. President Dan Quisenberry presented the award, a staffer presented a tribute from Senator Mark Huizenga, and NHA brought a beautiful gift basket for the occasion. One of the most memorable moments came when students formed a tunnel for their teacher to run through on her way back to her classroom, a joyful display of just how deeply she is loved at Chandler Woods.

This recognition was especially meaningful, as Chandler Woods is not only a National Blue Ribbon School recognized for its academic excellence, but also a community where children learn the interpersonal skills they need to grow into thriving adults. The ceremony reflected the heart of what makes Michigan’s charter public schools extraordinary: educators who inspire, uplift, and create lasting impact.

A Legacy of Dedication

Kristin Helmbold has been part of Chandler Woods Charter Academy for 27 years, beginning her career as a part-time gym teacher right out of college. Over the years, she has worn many hats including teaching sixth grade, and ultimately finding her passion guiding eighth graders. She describes teaching eighth grade as one of her greatest passions.

Her commitment extends beyond academics. For more than 20 years, she has led the Parent Awareness Night, where eighth graders select topics that matter deeply to them and present their work in a science fair–style event for parents. The project empowers students to find their voice while giving parents new perspectives. As she explains,

“The experience changes both students and parents—kids gain confidence in their voices, and parents gain new perspectives.”

Building Community, One Student at a Time

What makes Kristin Helmbold truly remarkable is not just her innovative teaching, but the way she invests in her students as people. She often spends her lunch hours with them, listening to their stories and learning from their insights.

Our kids treat each other with such kindness, building a strong community where even new students are quickly embraced and made to feel at home. They are the bravest people I know, and I’ve learned some of my greatest lessons from them.”

That spirit of community runs deep at Chandler Woods. It is a school where families, staff, and students feel like one big family—a culture which was started from the very beginning by teachers including Mrs. Helmbold, and carried forward by all the staff to this day.

Why MAPSA Chose Her

Through the #MiCharter Hero’s project, MAPSA celebrates charter public school teachers, leaders, and staff who inspire, uplift, and create extraordinary impact in Michigan’s charter schools. Kristin Helmbold embodies that mission. Her decades of dedication, her creativity in designing experiences that change lives, and her deep love for her students make her a true hero.

As she reflected on what motivates her she shared,

My faith in Jesus, my husband Kirk, and our son Malachi are among my greatest blessings. The community at Chandler Woods is truly one-of-a-kind. Each week, I see former students return just to greet their old teachers—a powerful reminder of the lasting connections built here.”

Congratulations, Mrs. Helmbold!

MAPSA is proud to recognize Kristin Helmbold as the September #MiCharter Hero. Her story is a reminder that while academics are vital, the heart of education is about compassion, community, and preparing students to be their best selves.
