LANSING, Michigan – Gov. Rick Snyder released his 2018 budget today. Among other things, the K-12 budget uses the 2X formula to call for a $120 per-pupil increase for higher-funded districts and a $240 increase for lower-funded districts (which includes all charter schools).
Below is a statement on the budget proposal that can be attributed to Dan Quisenberry, President of the Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA), the state charter school association.
“We continue to support the recommendation that addresses the unfair funding gap that exists in our state,” Quisenberry said. “We’ve continued to be strong proponents of the 2X formula. Every public school student in Michigan deserves the same opportunity at a quality education, and that can only happen if we value all students equally. The opportunity gap is still there, and this definitely keeps us moving in the right direction.
“We also need to value the educational choices that parents have made for their children.
Whatever type of public school they’ve chosen for their child, we should value that choice equally. All children learn differently, but all children should be treated equally when it comes to funding.
“We’re concerned about the unequal treatment of certain types of schools, such as online schools, when it comes to valuing those students equally. Students shouldn’t be punished because they’ve chosen an innovative school that works best for them."
