At the heart of every great school is a dedicated educator who goes above and beyond to make a lasting impact on students and families. This month, we celebrate Shannon Polcyn, a 6th Grade Social Studies Teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan (HVAM), as our February #MICharterHero. Shannon's journey to education is a testament to passion, adaptability, and the power of virtual learning to build strong connections.

A Journey to Education

Shannon’s path to teaching may not have been traditional, but it was filled with meaningful experiences that shaped her passion for education. With a background in sociology and criminal justice, she initially began working in schools as a substitute teacher while raising her two daughters.

Later, she spent four years supporting English Learner (EL) students, which deepened her commitment to student success. When a friend introduced her to Highpoint Virtual Academy, she saw an opportunity to balance her professional and personal life while making a meaningful impact on students in a virtual setting.

Starting as an advisor, Shannon quickly realized that teaching was her true calling. “I never dreamed that I would have become a teacher, but it has been something that has easily become a passion while working for Highpoint,” she said. Now, as a full-time teacher at HVAM, Shannon is dedicated to engaging students in thoughtful discussions and fostering a love for learning.

Building Meaningful Connections in a Virtual Classroom

One of Shannon’s favorite aspects of teaching at Highpoint is the diverse backgrounds of her students. Virtual education provides opportunities for students who may not thrive in a traditional classroom setting, and Shannon values the ability to build personal connections with them. “Choosing a virtual school for your child isn’t an easy decision, and our students come here for a variety of reasons,” she said. “Things aren’t cookie-cutter here, and we can build relationships with students on a more personal level.”

Shannon also emphasizes the importance of family involvement at HVAM. “Here at Highpoint, we put a lot of emphasis on family communication and engagement, which is so important for student success,” she explains. “Despite the virtual nature of our program, we hope that students feel just as connected—if not more so—to their teachers and staff.”

Creating Lasting Educational Experiences

One of Shannon’s most impactful lessons revolved around the question of why people live where they do. By exploring push-and-pull factors that influence settlement patterns, students were able to connect the lesson to their own lives. “Many of my students had real-life examples that led to meaningful discussions,” Shannon said. “I think they will remember this lesson moving forward.”

Her ability to turn academic concepts into relevant, real-world discussions showcases her talent for engaging students in deep learning, even in a virtual environment.

A Passion for Community and Lifelong Learning

Beyond the classroom, Shannon remains an active member of her community. She started a book club three years ago, which brings friends together to discuss literature each month. She also stays involved in her daughters’ school district, demonstrating her dedication to education both professionally and personally.

When asked what makes Highpoint special, Shannon highlights the strong support system among staff and students. “At every meeting, we discuss student and family support and relationships—how important they are to each and every one of us. Our passion for developing and maintaining personal relationships makes us stand out from the rest.” She said.

Shannon Polcyn embodies the spirit of Michigan’s charter school educators—dedicated, passionate, and committed to making a difference. We are proud to recognize her as our February #MICharterHero!
