BENTON TOWNSHIP — America’s debate over providing more school choice grew more fierce with the appointment of charter school advocate Betsy DeVos as the new U.S. education secretary.

Meanwhile, over the last 20 years, a charter school in Berrien County has grown into a model of how to engage kids, their families and the community in innovative educational programs.

Countryside Academy in Benton Township was founded as Countryside Charter School in 1996, and held its first K-8 classes in September 1997 after a three-year court case over a desegregation ruling.

It has expanded from a couple hundred students studying in five portable classrooms to an institution with 700 students in grades K-12 on two campuses, including its main location along Meadowbrook Road and its site for early learners in Millburg.
