Personalized Learning

Building Schools That Adapt to Students — Not the Other Way Around

Michigan’s education system was designed for uniformity. Today’s students require customization.

Personalized Learning is about moving beyond a one-size-fits-all model toward classrooms where students progress based on mastery, engage deeply with content aligned to their strengths, and demonstrate learning in meaningful ways. Research conducted through the Dream Lab, featuring educators, parents, and national data, confirms what many already know: families want greater transparency, flexibility, and ownership in their child’s education.

Charter schools are uniquely positioned to lead this shift. But scaling personalized learning requires more than classroom creativity. It requires policy flexibility, thoughtful accountability design, scheduling innovation, and sustained support for educators.

At the 2025 MI Charter School Symposium, Blake Buzard (Renaissance Public School Academy) shared a powerful reminder of what can happen when curiosity drives learning. His journey shows how inquiry-based instruction can ignite ownership, motivation, and real-world success.
