No education reform succeeds without teachers.
The Dream Lab research makes one thing clear: improving student outcomes requires transforming the professional experience of educators. Teacher well-being, retention, autonomy, collaboration, and meaningful leadership pathways are not peripheral issues; they are central to sustainable innovation.
Educators across Michigan consistently voiced the need for greater professional agency, structured collaboration time, leadership opportunities that don’t require leaving the classroom, and professional development that is relevant and applied.
Charter schools can lead this redefinition, positioning teachers not simply as deliverers of content, but as mentors, facilitators, designers of learning environments, and drivers of school culture.
At the 2025 MI Charter School Symposium, Krystal Thomas (Detroit Academy of Arts & Sciences) shares her journey of growth and what becomes possible when we intentionally carve out space for teachers to dream within the school day.
