I’m Kennedy Haworth, a graduate of The Chatfield School, a public charter school in Lapeer, Michigan, and I credit that education with accelerating my academic path and building the confidence that led to my current career as District Director for State Sen. Kevin Daley in the Michigan Legislature.
Charter schools have some interesting careers, and I’m proud mine is one of them. I graduated from Chatfield before going on to high school and then Michigan State University (MSU), and I want to share how my charter school experience prepared me for a fulfilling career in public service.
I’m proud that my charter school accelerated my learning, but that it also gave me a close-knit community where I built confidence and strong relationships. That combination helped me graduate from MSU at 19 and prepared me for my current role in the Legislature.
In my old public school — in kindergarten and first grade— I was an average student who wasn’t being academically challenged. I was also pretty shy around adults. I needed a school that would both push me academically while also helping me grow socially.
When I moved to The Chatfield School in second grade, teachers immediately placed me in advanced math and continued pushing me ahead as I was ready. At the same time, Chatfield’s small, community-driven environment helped me build the communication skills and connections I rely on today.

Because of the acceleration I received at Chatfield, I entered high school already ahead, started AP classes early, and earned enough credits to graduate from MSU at 19.
Chatfield’s close‑knit culture also taught me how to talk with adults comfortably — a skill that’s been essential now that I work in the Legislature as one of the youngest staff members.
As District Director, I’m responsible for managing nearly every aspect of operations within Michigan’s 26th Senate District, working directly for State Sen. Kevin Daley.
One recent moment that stands out to me. Senator Daley and I hosted a meeting for local leaders to discuss potential infrastructure opportunities for the district. When we walked in, the Senator joked that I probably wouldn’t know anyone in the room.
As it turned out, one of the leaders was the father of a girl I went to school with at Chatfield. Because of that connection, we didn’t have to go through the usual small talk or ice‑breaking. We already had a level of familiarity and trust, which made the conversation more direct, productive, and honest. It set the tone for a much smoother meeting overall.

My advice to educators comes down to two priorities:
When schools personalize learning and create a community where every student is known, it can change both their academic trajectory and their confidence for life.
Is The Chatfield School a public school?
Yes. The Chatfield School is a tuition-free public charter school in Lapeer, Michigan. Like other public charter schools, it’s open to any student through free, open enrollment.
How do charter schools differ from traditional public schools?
Charter schools have the flexibility and autonomy to differentiate their curriculum, facilities, and school focus. Some may focus on college prep, Montessori curriculum, fine arts, and more. The possibilities are endless, but charter schools aim to provide a range of options so that parents can choose the school that best fits their child.
Do charter schools like Chatfield offer academic acceleration?
Many charter schools are able to place students in advanced coursework based on readiness rather than age or grade level.
