For graduating senior Kaden Klooster, some of the most meaningful moments of high school happened outside of the classroom.

Whether performing with the school band, competing on the basketball court, or participating in dual enrollment opportunities, Kaden found spaces at Grand Traverse Academy where he could explore his interests, challenge himself, and discover what he wanted for his future.

“I’ve had a great time here at this school,” Kaden said.

A student at Grand Traverse Academy since kindergarten, Kaden took full advantage of the opportunities available to him throughout his educational journey. He participated in basketball, baseball, and band — experiences that helped him build confidence, friendships, and strong relationships with teachers and coaches.

“I’ve been able to grow good connections with the teachers and with the coaches,” he said.

One of his proudest athletic accomplishments came this year, when he surpassed 500 career points across his junior high and varsity basketball career — a milestone that reflected years of dedication and perseverance.

But it was music that ultimately helped shape Kaden’s future plans.

After joining the band in elementary school, Kaden continued performing throughout high school, participating in concerts, playing solos, and collaborating closely with fellow student musicians.

“Band has been a great experience for me overall,” Kaden said. “It’s just been a great time playing with my fellow students and friends.”

Through those experiences, Kaden discovered a growing interest in audio technology, music production, and sound engineering — interests he now plans to pursue professionally after graduation.

This fall, Kaden will attend Northwestern Michigan College’s Audio Tech program, where he hopes to continue learning about audio production and music technology before potentially continuing his education elsewhere in Michigan.

“I’m very interested and curious in anything audio-related and music,” he said.

Alongside extracurricular opportunities, Kaden says Grand Traverse Academy also challenged him academically and allowed him to move at a pace that fit his abilities.

As early as sixth grade, he was taking eighth-grade math courses, allowing him to stay two years ahead in math throughout high school. By 10th grade, he had completed the school’s highest-level math coursework, creating flexibility in his schedule for additional opportunities like dual enrollment.

“That gave me some free time over the past two years to also do dual enrollment and stuff like that,” he explained.

For Kaden, Grand Traverse Academy’s personalized approach helped create an educational experience where academics, extracurricular involvement, and career exploration could all work together.

His story reflects how learner choice can help students discover passions beyond traditional coursework — and how meaningful extracurricular opportunities can open doors to future careers.

“Charter schools are a great option,” Kaden said. “I’ve had nothing but good experiences here, and I appreciate everything that this charter school has done for me.”

As he prepares for the next chapter, Kaden leaves Grand Traverse Academy with more than just memories from the basketball court or the band room. He leaves with a clear direction for his future and the confidence to pursue it.
