For Tara Reger, teaching is more than just a job, it’s a personal mission to uplift and inspire students the same way her own teachers once inspired her. Tara completed the Professional Innovators Program and earned her Michigan Standard Teaching Certificate in January 2025.

She joined the Professional Innovators in Educators program because, as she puts it, her “why” as a teacher is to be the kind of role model who helps students believe in themselves. While she expected to gain tools and strategies, what she didn’t anticipate was how much the experience would strengthen her sense of purpose.

The Power of Community

One of the most valuable aspects of the experience, according to Tara, was the opportunity to connect with fellow educators. Sharing ideas and collaborating with others reminded her that teachers across the board are facing many of the same struggles and celebrating similar successes. That realization made her feel supported and encouraged, reinforcing that she’s not alone in her journey.

A Fresh Approach to Teaching

Tara quickly discovered that the Professional Innovators program is not just about professional development. It’s a space for creative thinking, risk-taking, and connecting with like-minded educators. She encourages other teachers to step into the opportunity.“I’d say go for it, you won’t regret it,” she says. “It’s a chance to shake things up, try out new ideas, and connect with other teachers who get it.”

This collaborative spirit reenergized her, reminding her that innovation doesn’t have to be big or flashy. Sometimes, it’s the small, thoughtful changes that make the biggest difference for students.

Balancing Courses with a Busy Schedule

Time management is always a concern for busy educators, but the structure of the program made it realistic and manageable, even during the busiest parts of the school year. Tara appreciated that the program provided the course dates in advance, which helped her plan ahead and stay on top of her responsibilities.

She shared that “staying organized, using my planning time wisely, and giving myself grace when things got hectic made it manageable.” Her advice to others? Prepare ahead, stay flexible, and remember that progress doesn’t require perfection.

New Opportunities and Leadership Growth

Tara shares that "the program definitely opened new doors for me. I now tutor candidates preparing for the Lower and Upper Elementary MTTC exams as they work to enter the program."She believes the success in the program has contributed to her ability to support future educators, while also growing in her own leadership skills. She sees it as a direct result of the confidence and clarity she's obtained.
