Every classroom is different, and so is every teacher who steps into one. At Professional Innovators in Education, MAPSA's alternative route to teacher certification, candidates tell us their learning doesn't stay on the page. It shows up in their classrooms the next day.
Two candidates recently shared what that looks like in practice: coursework that bends to fit their role, and learning that reconnects them with why they teach.
No two candidates hold the same position, teach the same grade, or serve the same students. For Special Education Teacher Nicole Fleminger, the value of the program is how closely the assignments follow that reality.
"I love how practical the course information is. It's more than just theory. I've learned so much that directly relates to what I'm doing with my students right now. I also like how much the assignments can be tailored to my current position at the school." [Nicole Fleminger, Special Education Teacher]
When assignments connect to a teacher's own students, the work does double duty. Time spent on coursework becomes time spent improving the classroom they already lead.
Good professional learning does more than check a box. It sparks new ideas. For Debra Smith, a 2nd grade teacher, the program renewed her sense of purpose and gave her fresh tools to bring into her teaching.
Professional Innovators has reminded Debra of her why for teaching. She finds the lessons, resources, and seminars with collaboration to be enlightening, and she's inspired to use some of the tools and strategies from class in her own classroom.
That inspiration is where creativity starts. When teachers leave a seminar eager to try something new, their students feel the difference.
Individualized development means a pathway that meets teachers where they are: in their own classrooms, with their own students, and with their own reasons for teaching. As our candidates show, that kind of learning is both practical and inspiring.
